4 Authentic Sales Tips for Small Business Owners Who Hate Feeling Pushy

Have You Ever Felt “Icky” About Selling? You’re Not Alone.

If you’ve ever hesitated to talk about your product or service because you didn’t want to feel pushy, salesy, or fake—welcome. You’re in the right place.

In this post, I’m going to give you 4 refreshing and real sales tips that are designed specifically for small business owners and women entrepreneurs who want to sell with integrity and confidence.

These tips are pulled directly from one of my most downloaded podcast episodes of all time—and it all started with a personal story of how sales almost cost me a friendship.

Let’s dive in.

Tip #1: Prioritize the Person Over the Sale

Traditional sales advice tells you to “never let them walk away.” But in reality? When you truly care about people, sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is let them say “not right now.”

Building a connection rooted in trust—not pressure—is what creates lifelong customers.

If they’re not ready, let them walk away. They’ll remember how you made them feel… and they’ll come back when the timing is right.

Tip #2: Continue Serving After the Sale

You’ve probably heard the phrase “serve before you sell.” But what if you kept serving after the transaction?

The best sales tip I’ve ever learned is this: the sale isn’t the finish line—it’s the starting line.

Follow up. Send a tip. Share a resource. Surprise them. Show them you care. Creating value after the sale is what turns a one-time customer into a brand evangelist.

Tip #3: Think Long-Term, Not Just Right Now

Sales pros don’t chase quick wins—they build long-term trust.

One of my favorite sales moments was offering a boutique owner a small shipping bonus instead of dropping my product’s pricing. That small gesture earned me a long-term retail partnership (and many reorders).

You don’t have to “win” every transaction. You just need to build goodwill.

Tip #4: Choose Community Over Competition

This one’s bold. In a world obsessed with outperforming, what if you actually celebrated your competition?

No one has your exact story, style, or energy. That’s your superpower. Instead of tearing others down, uplift your fellow makers and founders. There’s room for everyone—and your community will respect and remember how you show up.

You Can Sell Differently

These sales tips aren’t just theory—they’re powerful mindset shifts that can transform how you run your business.

Selling with heart isn’t a weakness—it’s your greatest strength. And when you prioritize people, relationships, and integrity, your revenue doesn’t just grow—your impact does too.
